First Year Show

First Year Show
We made it one whole year without going bankrupt, embarrassing ourselves too bad, or getting divorced - YAY!!! We are KILLING IT!! To help celebrate our first year, we threw a party - kind of. Our first year show at the ACW (Anchorage Community Works - a local community art space that has a strong focus on printmaking) was so much fun, and a great success. It was pretty fantastic to see all of the years prints framed, hung, and all together! Thank you to everyone that has followed us and supported the endeavor. Thank you to our 2016 collaborators: John Tibbott, Leon Ryan, Mitch Ansara, and Craig Updegrove.  Your talent and vision were delightful to work with. The final prints for the year (new work from all the collaborators and Joe) will be released over the next month or so, and we have plans for next year that should be pretty rad, unless we screw it up….always possible….

This last year has been a whirl-wind of art, ink, machinery, sales, cooperation, collaboration and madness! We started out with a 100 year old C&P, 3 designs, a little education, and a lot of aspirations. Shockingly, it has all come together to make something that in some ways we hoped for, and in other ways, had never even conceived.

The artists that we collaborated with could not have been a better fit for our first year. Talented, patient, encouraging, and of complimentary (that really helps us), they were integral in keeping us on target and moving forward. John Tibbott kept us challenged with his crazy colors and hairline registration, Leon Ryan inspired us with badass aesthetic, and Mitch Ansara kept everything fun and light with his uniquely adorable designs.

Forty prints are a lot for one year - especially our first year - but with more collaborators, and crazy new equipment, we are so excited to see what the second year brings!

Melancholy Press Post Digital Letterpress Workshop

Being hosted at the Anchorage Community Works 349 E Ship Creek Ave
Anchorage, AK On October 8th from 12:30-4:30 .. or thereabouts.

Who is this workshop for?  Artists, hobbyists, graphic designers, crafters, poets…..Anyone who has an interest in making letterpress material, be it art prints, labels, hang tags, business cards,  greeting cards….more than I can list!

Right now, there is a resurgence of the traditional letterpress medium  -  YAY!!!

Equipment and tools that were recently considered obsolete have dodged scrappers and ended up in the hands of artists who have developed modern methods of utilizing the unique value of the letterpress medium.  One of the most exciting innovations in the medium is the use of photopolymer plates.

In this workshop we will go over the how-to’s on ordering photopolymer plates, and then demonstrate how to hand pull prints using these plates. We will cover the meat and potatoes of digitally processing and manipulating work from original illustrations, photos or graphic material (both digital or analog) to prep for plate production, then demonstrate, utilizing the ACW’s Kelsey Platen Presses, and proofing press, hands on printing from photopolymer plates.

Hosted by ACW and taught by Joe and Donna Carr, the people behind “Melancholy Press”, who utilize photopolymer plates to make limited edition multicolor letterpress prints.  This workshop follows the First Friday show from Melancholy Press, where there will be many examples of photopolymer letterpress work by artists from all over the world.

This is also the day after our big “The First Year” show.. with all sorts of awesomeness. so yeah we will prolly be all hung over but still partially coherent and informative. - to sign up follow this handy event link

Some of our favorite prints are about printing. Maybe, we’re just bias - but whatever. Printing is awesome, getting your hands inky.. working a press. It is absolutely the best. And that’s what The four May Prints / Cards are all about. PRINT LOVE.

Check out our shop to get the limited letterpress prints. THey’ll look lovely in your studio.

March Release!

So exciting having these new prints in the shop. Working with John Tibbotts illustrations was really awesome. We love how WTF and Hairman came out.

Rocket Lass and Harder they Fall wrap up Joes space prints from February.  Thanks so much for all the support and especially for buying from our little shop.

February Release!! loud noises

I mean really it’s a leap year, so it only makes sense to wait till the last day of the month to put out some fresh new Melancholy Press Prints.

Ode to Joy

Full Throttle

Pretty Exciting. These are both super fun prints to make. Four color on Lettra. And the content is the sort of sophisticated material that hearkens back to a more learned time. A time when space was way more tentacles and cosmic rays.

Feel free to ogle. They’re pretty rad, photos don’t do them justice.

it took a couple (dozen) days longer than anticipated. But the January Melancholy release is live… kinda. If there are things broken its only cause we suck at this… yay! thanks so much for the wonderful patience and incredible contribution from  Leon and Mitch.. damn you guys, seriously XOXOXOXO cause fuck, it was way rad working with your art.

HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY destructively depressive holiday season.
Hope all the Melancholy followers out there are taking your vitamins and getting as much sunlight as possible during this darkest day of the year. After mailing out our orders this morning from over the weekend. We are shutting the studio down. Cause it’s not like any orders will make it there on time at this point anyhow.
So please enjoy your favorite booze this holiday and know we’re toasting to you all who helped make our launch pretty damn okay.
Hugs and stuff
